Purpose
Parents’ role in education is complementary to that of teachers
and comprises encouragement, motivation, and coaching. All the help and
guidance adults give should not mask the primary goal of students, learning to
learn. As distance learning has become the new normal for schools, at least
temporarily, the role of parents has grown. In home schooling, the roles of
teacher and parent are generally played by the same person. This blog is
intended to help parents grow into their role as math coaches of their children,
to help them to think like
mathematicians.
Scope
The blog will first address education, coaching, and
attitudes toward mathematics. It will gradually then address Kindergarten (K) through
twelfth-grade math in general and Common Core Standards in particular.
The Reader (You)
This blog is for parents, to the benefit of their children.
Your Guide (Me)
I will be your guide. I have taken
enough math and engineering classes to understand that learning math takes
time. I also have experience teaching (computer science). I don’t know it all; I
will be learning and re-learning along with you.
Organization of the Blog
The blog will be organized around the standards of Common
Core Mathematics (CCM). I believe that I can show that learning those standards
will benefit your children. If I do not convince you, I offer a full refund. 😊
Cost
Free,
meaning that no money will change hands.
Not
free, meaning that your time and that of your children is precious.
